Check out this story about Micah Grimes, coach of the girls basketball team at Covenant School in Dallas, who was fired for not being apologetic about winning a game 100-0.
Covenant School issued a statement saying that the shutout did not reflect a “Christlike approach to competition.”
I think its crappy and reflects a lack in judgement to coach your team to trash another team that is clearly less able to complete than your team. However, I don’t know if its right to fire him over it. I mean, as a coach you want your team to do its best and win. As a human being, you want to teach them that winning and being a good competitor doesn’t have to mean that you degrade and humiliate your opponents. Its a tough call.
at first i thought, its not a big deal, those girls need to suck it up and play better if they don’t want to get clobbered like that. but then, i heard about them leaving their starters in and full court pressing late in the 4th quarter, not to mention that these girls have learning disabilities. this was a little much.
So what is it that bothers people most about this… there seems to be more than one issue going on. In competition is it degrading to lose, fairly? Should they give up points to make the other team feel better? How is that fair. It sounds like they weren’t hurling insults at them or telling them they were worthless. Anyone who has ever played any type of sport know that you go out and play as hard as you can every time. What coach gets his team ready by telling them to go out and intentionally door poorly? I think you should apologize for poor behavior, not for being more skilled in a competition. It’s a game, not life.
